CERN & accelerator experiments
What do accelerator experiments explore?
Collide protons at extremely high energies to recreate aspects of the high-energy environment of the early universe. Study rare reactions and traces of unknown particles to explore the fundamental laws governing matter and the universe.

The CERN laboratory
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, lies across the French–Swiss border near Geneva. Researchers from around the world work together to study particles and their interactions.
CERN is the laboratory; the LHC is one of its accelerators. CERN's research extends beyond the LHC.

The LHC accelerates protons to nearly the speed of light and collides them, using the collision energy to produce heavy particles rarely created in everyday conditions. By comparing reaction rates and particle properties with theoretical predictions, researchers test known laws and search for new physics.
The LHC is a ring about 27 km around. Two beams of protons or ions travel in opposite directions and collide at chosen locations. ATLAS surrounds one of those collision points.

Measuring traces with ATLAS
The accelerator creates the collisions; the detector studies what emerges. ATLAS combines detector layers to infer particle types and motion from measurements of their paths, energies and other properties.
Tracking detectors, calorimeters and muon detectors have different roles. A trigger selects which collisions to record. No single device makes every measurement.

SeekUnknown uses previously recorded, publicly released ATLAS collision data—not a live feed from CERN. Track curvature, detector geometry and playback timing are simplified for learning.
Start by comparing which particles are present, their directions and their momenta. One event cannot establish a Higgs signal or a new particle. That requires many events, background comparisons and measurement uncertainties.
